Exercise 101

Exercise and physical fitness start with how muscles work and how the body moves. The basics cover how much exercise is enough, muscle anatomy and physiology, exercise and muscle performance, sports fitness and the health benefits of physical activity.

Exercise throughout life

Exercise needs change through life, from childhood to older age, and every body can be active. Topics include exercise for children, women and older adults, exercise during pregnancy and staying active with a disability.

Exercise types

Exercise comes in many types, from aerobic activity that works the heart and lungs to training that builds strength, balance and flexibility. Types include walking, running, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), resistance training, yoga and tai chi.

Exercise and health

Exercise affects health well beyond fitness, from the heart and muscles to the bones. Topics include physical activity and the heart, arthritis, preventing back pain, good posture, cancer risk and preventing high blood pressure.

Risks of inactivity

Physical inactivity, or a sedentary lifestyle, is linked to many chronic conditions and to the loss of muscle and balance with age. Conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and depression.

Exercise safety and recovery

Exercise safety and recovery span staying safe in sports and recovering from exercise, injury or illness. Topics include winter sports and eye safety, hydration and electrolytes, dietary protein, physical therapy and cardiac, pulmonary and stroke rehabilitation.

Performance-enhancing drugs and supplements

Performance-enhancing drugs and supplements are substances taken to build muscle, strength or endurance beyond what training alone achieves. They include bodybuilding and performance supplements, steroids and erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that raises the red blood cell count.

Sports injuries

Sports injuries happen in training and play, to young athletes and adults alike, and range from minor strains to fractures and concussion. They include sprains and strains, ACL injuries, rotator cuff injuries, runner's knee, tennis elbow and concussion in children.
