Introduction to sexual health

Sexual health is well-being in body and mind around sex and sexuality, at every age. The overview covers how sex works, the role of the mind, what can go wrong, teen sexual health and talking to children about sex, sex and travel, and sexuality in later life.

Biological joy of sex

The biology of sexual pleasure involves body and mind together. It covers what sex is and how it works, libido and orgasm, the clitoris, masturbation and oral sex, and the part the mind plays in sexual health.

Sexual and reproductive anatomy

Sexual and reproductive anatomy takes in the organs and hormones of sex and reproduction, which mature at puberty. The female side covers the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina, clitoris, breasts and the menstrual cycle; the male side the penis, testes, prostate gland, sperm and testosterone.

Safer sex and contraception

Safer sex lowers the risk of STDs, and contraception prevents pregnancy. Topics range from male and female condoms, birth control methods and emergency contraception to tubal ligation and vasectomy, unplanned and teen pregnancy, and abortion, including medication abortion.

LGBTQIA+ health

LGBTQIA+ health looks at the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people. It covers gay and bisexual men's health and sexuality, lesbian sexuality, gender-affirming care and health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth.

Intimacy and abuse

Healthy intimacy rests on consent and respect, and abuse breaks both. It covers sexual consent, teen sexuality and talking to children about sex, and abuse from dating violence and intimate partner violence to emotional abuse, stalking, sexual coercion, rape and date rape drugs.

Sexually transmitted diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs, pass from person to person through sexual contact. They include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, genital herpes and HPV, which can cause genital warts. Other topics include STI testing, safer sex and how STDs affect women and pregnancy.

Assisted reproductive technology

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) uses medical procedures to help people with infertility have a baby. It covers ovarian stimulation and intrauterine insemination, IVF and single-embryo transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, egg donation, surrogates and gestational carriers, and fertility preservation.

Sexual health treatment

Treatments for sexual health range from lifestyle changes and therapies for sexual problems to surgery on the reproductive organs. They include supplements for sexual enhancement, vasectomy, tubal ligation, hysterectomy, orchiopexy for undescended testicles, hormone therapy for cancer and breast reconstruction after mastectomy.
