Kidney and urinary system anatomy

The kidneys are the primary organs of the urinary system. They filter the blood, remove the wastes, and also maintain a healthy balance of water, salts, and minerals in your blood. Without this balance, nerves, muscles, and other tissues in your body may not work normally.

Kidney diseases and disorders

Kidney disease means your kidneys are damaged and can’t filter blood the way they should. Kidney disease is common. You are at greater risk for kidney disease if you have diabetes or high blood pressure. Learn about kidney disease, screening tests and how to keep your kidneys healthy.

Ureter and urethra diseases and disorders

The ureters carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder, and the urethra carries it out of the body. Their conditions range from urinary tract infections in women and children to vesicoureteral reflux, in which urine flows back toward the kidneys, a duplicated urethra and cancer of the ureter.

Urinary system tests

Urinary system tests check how well the kidneys and bladder work and help find the cause of a problem. They range from kidney tests of blood and urine and a kidney biopsy to imaging of the urinary tract and urodynamic testing, which measures how the bladder stores and releases urine.

Kidney wellness, management and treatment

Kidney wellness rests on daily habits, such as eating well with chronic kidney disease in adults and children and easing chronic stress. When the kidneys fail, care ranges from conservative management to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and kidney transplantation, alongside lithotripsy for stones and urinary diversion.
