Lung anatomy

Your lungs lie on each side of your breastbone and fill the inside of your chest cavity. The airways are pipes that carry oxygen-rich air to your lungs. They also carry carbon dioxide, a waste gas, out of your lungs.

Lung cancer types and treatment

When cancer starts in the lungs, it's called lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Common symptoms include constant chest pain and coughing blood. Lung cancers are grouped into two main types called small cell and non-small cell, the latter being more common.

Lung cancer causes and risks

Lung cancer is caused mostly by smoking, its leading risk factor, but people who have never smoked can get it too. Other risks include radon in homes, asbestos and silica dust at work, which can also cause silicosis, and inherited lung cancer risk genes.

Lung cancer screening and diagnosis

Lung tests include pulmonary function tests that are most helpful in determining the general type of lung disorder and determining the severity. Imaging tests allow doctors to determine the specific cause of a lung disorder. Learn about different tests used to diagnose lung diseases and conditions.

Lung cancer prevention and rehabilitation

Lung cancer prevention starts with avoiding risk factors, above all tobacco smoke, along with radon and other cancer-causing substances. Pulmonary rehabilitation, a program of exercise, breathing techniques and education, helps people with lung disease breathe and function better.

Lung cancer complications

Lung cancer and other cancers in the chest can cause cardiopulmonary syndromes, problems that affect breathing and the heart. They include shortness of breath, fluid around the lungs or heart and blocked airways or large veins, each recognized and treated in its own way.

Lung cancer research

Lung cancer research covers the work under way to better prevent, detect and treat lung cancer, one of the most common cancers. It follows what recent studies have found about the disease and how researchers are turning those findings into new tests and treatments.

Lung cancer for health professionals

Clinician summaries of lung cancer, written for health professionals. They cover the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer and of small cell lung cancer, along with the evidence on lung cancer screening and on lung cancer prevention.
